How much does your animal weigh?
Measure the heart girth and body length with a tape, or a string and a ruler, and we give you the weight with its margin of error.
How it is calculated
It is Schaeffer’s formula, the same one the app uses: girth² × length ÷ 300 in inches and pounds, which is ÷ 10,838 in centimeters and kilograms, for cattle and buffalo (÷ 14,450 for pigs). The margin is about 5 % for cattle, 7 % for buffalo and 8 % for pigs.
Careful with doses: weight decides the dose of many drugs. That is why we give a range, not an exact number.
Questions
How accurate is the tape?
For cattle it is off by about 5 %: on a 1,000 lb cow, around 50 lb either way. To sell by weight, use a scale.
Does it work for sheep, goats or horses?
No: the formula is validated for cattle, buffalo and pigs. For other species we do not give a number we cannot stand behind.
