Never miss a calving
This calculator works for one animal. In the AURA AGRO IA app you mark which females are pregnant and since when, and the app reminds you a week before every calving, for the whole herd. You can also record pregnancy checks in the chute, animal by animal, while you weigh and vaccinate.
How long gestation lasts
We use the same numbers as the app:
- Cow: 280 days, about nine months and ten days. Depending on the breed it ranges from about 279 to 292: zebu cattle often go past 285.
- Water buffalo: 310 days, a month longer than a cow.
- Sow: 114 days, three months, three weeks and three days.
- Ewe and goat: 150 days, about five months.
It is an expected date: every animal has its own timing. That is why we also give you a window and suggest watching her from a week before.
Dry-off and close-up
For dairy cows and buffalo, the usual practice is to dry off about 60 days before calving (45 to 60), so the udder rests and the calf grows well. The last three weeks are the close-up period: a good time to move her to a nearby pasture and watch her ration. Sows go to the farrowing pen about five days before. Your veterinarian knows what is best for your herd.
